Raw vs usable capacity — each RAID mode differs
With 16× 18TB HDDs (raw 288 TB), usable capacity varies greatly depending on the RAID mode chosen.

Choose the right RAID balance between capacity, performance, and fault tolerance. BKNS offers free workload-based consulting.
- RAID 0:: maximum speed, no redundancy — not recommended
- RAID 6:: tolerates 2 disk failures, good read performance
- RAID 10:: highest performance, but uses 50% of capacity
- ZFS RAID-Z2:: tolerates 2 disk failures, checksum protects against bitrot
Tolerates two simultaneous disk failures. Fast reads, slower writes because of parity calculation.
Disks mirror each other in pairs, striped across several pairs. High IOPS, fast writes.
Similar to RAID 6 but with checksums that protect against bitrot. Snapshots, clones, dedup.
Cluster-level EC for petabyte-scale object storage. More capacity-efficient than 3× replication at PB scale.
Which workloads need a Storage Server?
When SSDs in your server are not enough — you need a dedicated storage tier.
Backup & archive
Veeam, Acronis, restic — back up multiple servers to a centralised storage, 1–7 year retention.
Video archive · CCTV
Camera recording systems, video editing, OTT origin. Store 30–90 days of continuous 4K video.
Data lake · Hadoop / Spark
HDFS / S3-compatible object storage for big data analytics, log analytics, AI training corpus.
Enterprise file server
SMB/NFS file sharing for design, engineering, graphics, and ERP teams — AD/LDAP access control.
Capacity & RAID consulting tailored to your workload
Tell us what you need to store, how long to retain it, and how many concurrent users — BKNS engineers will calculate the most cost-effective configuration.
BKNS Storage Servers are dedicated x86 servers housing many HDDs/SSDs, running an OS of your choice (TrueNAS, Proxmox, Ubuntu + ZFS). More flexible than boxed NAS appliances, less expensive than SAN appliances — ideal for mid-to-large enterprises.
RAID 6: 2 parity disks, ~87% usable capacity, good read performance, slower writes. Best for backup and archive. RAID 10: mirror + stripe, 50% usable capacity but 4–5× higher IOPS. Best for databases and VMs.
Enterprise HDDs (Seagate Exos, WD Ultrastar) have 2.5M hour MTBF, 550 TB/year workload rating, vibration sensors, and error recovery control — designed for 24/7 operation in multi-disk environments. Desktop HDDs have only 1M hour MTBF and are not designed for multi-disk RAID arrays.
Recommended if your workload has heavy random reads. ZFS L2ARC (read cache) and ZIL (write log) can improve IOPS by 5–10× for hot-data workloads. Recommended ratio: 1–2% of raw capacity for cache (e.g. 200 TB → 2–4 TB NVMe).
Yes. BKNS supports ZFS snapshot, send/recv replication to a secondary DC (cross-DC). Schedule snapshots hourly or daily with configurable retention. Integrates with Veeam and Acronis via iSCSI or NFS.
You have full root access. BKNS can pre-install: TrueNAS Scale (user-friendly web UI), Proxmox VE (combined VM), Ubuntu + Cockpit (CLI + web), OpenMediaVault. Or you can install your own OS.
