What is LiteSpeed?
LiteSpeed web server (LSWS for short) is a Linux web server built by LiteSpeed Technologies, first released in July 2003. It is a high-performance web server.
LiteSpeed was built to replace Apache — its configuration format mirrors Apache's, so switching is light work. Even the first full release integrated with the common server management panels: cPanel, Plesk, DirectAdmin.
In 2015 LSWS shipped HTTP/2 support in 5.0, and LSCache with ESI in 5.0.10.
Running LSWS cuts hardware spend and keeps sites stable — a good fit for WordPress, Drupal and Joomla sites that need more performance and tighter security.
Which LiteSpeed editions exist?
LiteSpeed web server comes in three editions:
OpenLiteSpeed — effective for high-traffic sites and, being open source, completely free. The trade-off: OpenLiteSpeed does not integrate with any server management panel (DirectAdmin, cPanel and so on).
Standard — suits small, low-traffic sites. Compatible with WHM, cPanel, DirectAdmin and others, and free for professional and personal use alike.
Enterprise — for large, high-traffic sites, compatible with most server management software. This is the commercial edition, and the one BKNS licences in the pricing above.
