To better understand email servers, you should know a few key terms:
What is SMTP? SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) is the protocol used to send mail out (outgoing mail servers).
What are POP3 and IMAP? Both POP3 and IMAP are incoming mail server protocols. POP3 (Post Office Protocol version 3) retrieves mail from the mail server — simple and lightweight, one server can serve thousands of users. IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol) accesses and retrieves mail from the mail server — mail stays on the server so users never worry about losing email, at the cost of more memory and storage on the IMAP server.
What is TLS? TLS (Transport Layer Security) works alongside SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) to provide encrypted transport for SASL-authenticated logins.
What is SASL? SASL (Simple Authentication and Security Layer) authenticates users; SASL performs authentication, then TLS provides encrypted transport of the authentication data.
What is webmail? Webmail is web-based email — such as Gmail, Hotmail or Yahoo Mail — letting users access their email at any time.
To configure an Email Server, first install and configure components such as the mail server software, MX Record, SPF Record, DKIM and DMARC Record.
You also need to configure settings such as the domain, email accounts, access permissions and system security. BKNS can assist you with this as part of the Email Server service.
The differences between Email Relay and Email Server:
EMAIL RELAY: You already run your own Email Server and manage the whole system yourself. — EMAIL SERVER: You rent BKNS's Email Server service and BKNS manages the server for you — you simply log in to the admin panel to manage users.
EMAIL RELAY: Your server sits at your office, or wherever you rent a VPS/server to build your mail server. — EMAIL SERVER: The mail server is hosted in BKNS's data centre.
EMAIL RELAY: Outbound delivery issues arise from poor sending-IP reputation and email management — the system can get flagged as spam or infected. You control your own IP reputation. — EMAIL SERVER: BKNS manages the sending IP of your Email Server.
EMAIL RELAY: All outbound email is routed through BKNS's system for processing. — EMAIL SERVER: All email is sent directly from BKNS's system.
The differences between Email Hosting and Email Server:
EMAIL HOSTING: Shared email hosting — the server is shared with other email hosting customers. — EMAIL SERVER: Dedicated server — each Email Server service runs on its own server.
EMAIL HOSTING: Shared IP — the IP is shared with other email hosting services. — EMAIL SERVER: Dedicated IP — one IP reserved for your plan, never shared with other Email Server customers.
EMAIL HOSTING: Mailbox count is limited by the plan's resources. — EMAIL SERVER: An Email Server can host far more mailboxes than email hosting.
We provide a clean IP (IP MAIL) at the moment you start the Email Server service. If the blacklist was caused on your side, we can help change the IP address for a fee.
However, this is only effective if your sending domain has a strong reputation, and you must comply with BKNS's Email Server terms of use.
Email Server is secured with SSL/TLS, email encryption, digital certificates, anti-spam and anti-virus, system access monitoring, access-permission controls and data-protection measures.
